Of approximately 28,000 business establishments to which the Kanagawa
Prefecture Pollution Control Ordinance applies (FY1996), nearly 10,000
use chemical substances.
(Private sector, Universities, Governments, etc.)
The number of research organizations in Kanagawa was 1,139 (January
1996). This is one of the highest figures in Japan.
Many business establishments such as advanced technological industries
use various kinds of chemical substances, raising concerns that they are
released into the environment through the manufacturing, distribution,
application and discharge process.
Kanagawa Prefecture is encouraging advanced technology industries to
locate here, to promote a shift in industrial structure and expects more
establishments in the future.
In recent years, the number of business establishments dealing with
biotechnology such as genetic engineering is increasing.
